Singh with wife STORYLINE : India's new prime minister Manmohan Singh is a soft-spoken, Oxford and Cambridge-educated economist, widely known as the architect of India's economic reforms and a respected political consensus builder. Singh was named prime minister of India on Wednesday, ending weeks of political turmoil that culminated with Sonia Gandhi's refusal to take the post. Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born widow at the head of the country's most powerful political dynasty, turned down the prime minister's job but remained leader of the Congress party, which ousted the Hindu-nationalist party of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in recent national elections. Singh, 71, was the technocrat who forged the opening of India's socialist-style economy, and has pledged to work to restore religious harmony, keep India investor friendly and seek peace with rival Pakistan. The 11 party ruling coalition is to be called the United Progressive Alliance.
