Children dancing to fight music LEADIN Horned sheep on the Indonesian island of Java are prized creatures that have been carefully bred to take part in fights. The fights generate enormous excitement in the town and are a lucrative source of income for those involved. STORYLINE : These are the fighting sheep of Garut, and their tournament has been a long-held tradition in this town since the early 1900s. The sheep are a source of pride for the people of the Indonesian island of Java. Locals believe that a district chief started sheep fighting in Garut in 1915, and it became popular from the 1930s through to 1970 because of its association with gambling. From 1970 onward, tournament officials stemmed the gambling and cleaned up the image of sheep fighting in this devout Muslim community. This has made sheep fighting even more popular. There are strict rules of how a sheep can take part in the tournament. It has to be at the age between two and a half and five years old. The sheep receives special treatment in the days leading up to the tournament. Owners feed them with good food, vitamins and herbal medicines to keep them in good shape, as sheep owner Deden Rohim explains. "We give the sheep additional nutrition, vitamins, eggs, herbal medicines and we also give them a massage before the fight. The sheep will get exhausted during the fight, thus it needs a strong stamina through intensive treatment."
