The industry does not care about animal welfare at all. It comes down to how much cruelty they can get away with in an effort to maximize stocking densities, yield and profit. Any challenge to these practices and the industry's response is always the same: this is "accepted practice" and has been thoroughly reviewed by veterinarians and animal welfare specialists - veterinarians and animal welfare specialists, I might add, who are paid by the industry to sit on governmental panels mandated to set standards. Hardly an unbiased source. That said, I can cite countless veterinarians and animal welfare behavourists who have been lobbying against these practices for decades. At the end of the day, however, this is not a clinical or technical issue, it is a moral or philosophical one. Morally speaking, this is indefensible.
