During the year 2011-12, SMEDA facilitated investment of around Rs.400 millions for establishment of dairy farms across Punjab. Till date, 13 farms have been established in prominent districts of Punjab such as Lahore, Kasur, Jehlum, Chakwal, Chiniot and Gujrat. These farms are developed on Modern concept of 'Environmentally Controlled Shed Systems' and comprise of Cows imported from Sweden with average milk production capacity of 30 litres/ day in contrast to local cows with avg. 11 litres/ day. As a part of the mentioned activity, SMEDA has arranged visits and seminar of following experts from Netherlands and Sweden with the aim to share technical knowledge of modern dairying and to identify bilateral opportunities for partnerships for the continued development of dairy SMEs. 1. Mr. Roelof van den Berg, Chairman, Export Net NV (Dutch Cattle Exporters Organization), Netherlands Schedule of Activities: • Visits of Star Dairy, Lahore, Saadat Dairy, Lahore on 11-12-12 (Tue) • Visit of Noble Dairy Sheikhupura, SS Dairy Muridkey 12-12-12 (Wed)) • One Day Interactive Seminar on Dairy Farming as Potential Investment Opportunity' on 13-12-12 (Thu) at Decent Dairy, Phoolnagar, Pattoki with 75-80 Potential Dairy SMEs Participation. • The seminar was conducted on Decent dairy Farm, Phholnagar, Pattoki which is totally environmentally controlled farm having 80 Dairy animals of Holsteins and Swedish Cow breeds with average 30 litres/day/cow (305 days) and run on Modern Good Animal Husbandry Practices. • The role of SMEDA for dairy and livestock sector development was presented. • The Swedish and Dutch Dairy Experts presented the scope and importance of controlled sheds for utilizing the maximum genetic potential of these exotic cows in the environmental conditions of Pakistan, especially hot and humid summer. Role of SMEDA in Dairy and Livestock Sector Development Dairy & Livestock Scenario • International Milk trade is US $ 65 Billion: Pakistan is importing US $ 250 million milk powder annually (50,000 tonns milk powder per year). • International Meat trade is US $ 300 billion: Pakistan share in Exports is only US $ 167 million (Meat and meat by products ) (Source: www.commoditytradeinternational.com) Pakistan Dairy & Livestock Sector Issue: Not Competitive: Why? • Low dairy breeds efficiency: 1000 ltr/animal/lactation as compare to 10000 ltr/animal/lactation in developed countries • Shortage/ unavailability of 'Trained/ skilled workforce' • Insufficient Milk marketing & processing system through processin companies as compared to Dairy Cooperatives in developed countries (New Zealand, USA etc.) • Inefficient breeds for meat: 600 gram and 150 grams Daily Weight gain as compared to 1000 grams and 400 grams respectively for beef and mutton • Lack of Internationally certified slaughter houses and supply chains.
