Tiger Released by Putin Kills 18 Goats in Chinese Farm A rare Siberian tiger released into the wild by Russian President Vladimir Putin has ravaged a goat farm in northeast China, a report says. The tiger, named Ustin, bit and killed 15 goats and left another three missing on a farm in Fuyuan County in China’s Heilongjiang Province on Sunday and Monday, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The farm owner, Guo Yulin, said dog barks alerted him to an incident on Sunday night, but a surveillance of the area revealed nothing unusual. However, the next morning he woke to find two goats dead and three others missing. The farmer said the tiger returned on Monday night without making any noise, and the following morning 13 goats were found dead. The local forestry department would compensate the farmer for the loss of the 18 goats. Russian President Vladimir Putin released three tigers in May, one of them Ustin. The two tigers that have entered China are fitted with tracking devices and monitored by Chinese wildlife protection workers. Another tiger, Kuzya, is thought to have raided a farm and eaten five chickens in another Heilongjiang county last month. In 2010, China and Russia agreed to establish a cross-border protection zone for Siberian tigers in a bid to save the endangered species. The two neighboring countries share information and have also set up identical monitoring systems for the tigers and their prey. There are around 500 Siberian tigers in the world, about 20 of which live in northeastern China. The rapid disappearance of the tigers is blamed on poaching of the animal and its prey.
