Hi Dave. I am Manny from Philippines. I find this video is very useful. I am planning to grow ginger in a sack. I just like to ask if you can tell me what is the specific time or number of day to cover the rhizome. Is it every week, a month or so? Please I need your reply for this. Thank You.

Why can't I grow it in soil?

Good video! I can hardly wait to grow my own ginger! Question, what kind of bag are you using? Where to get them? Thanks! Linda

THANKS MATE

I didn't know nature produces soilless mediums? How did you discourage the plant from producing leaves when it does what the hell it wants to?
-
Cool trick Ginger guy
-
but why you don't translat it to franch becaus my englsh is not good

The reason you want to use soilless mix is that its fairly sterile, lightweight and weedfree. Ginger is a root crop and is easy to rot, especially in our cooler climate of the north and soilless mix will minimize that.

The idea behind growing it in the bag he chose vs a burlap is that it will stay moist longer, especially in the summer. Burlap will wick moisture away, we don't want that. Regular garden soil will compact down too much and hinder growth. Organic ginger will grow with twice the vigor as conventionally grown ginger any day. Buy organic. Any ol'potting mix will do, but I would also choose an organic mix as well with mycorrhizae added. You could also plant right into the bag of soil. Put it on end, roll the top down for stability, and place the ginger about half way down into the mix. It will take longer to reach the surface so don't give up on it and keep it watered and fertilized. To me he makes it sound like it's such a big deal, but they are super easy to grow and are basically a plant it and forget it plant (unless the summer is super hot and dry). Last summer I got double what I planted in a large plastic pot and I knew nothing about how to grow ginger other than putting it in a pot, putting it in a sunny location, and watering and fertilizing. This year I am simply gonna plop it into a bag of soil, set that into a pot (for stability), and let it do it's thing. They make great houseplants as well. Mine finally died back completely but I think it was because of the super dry air we have in the winter. Couldn't watered it enough I suppose. The ginger is fine underneath the soil and I harvest and use it as I need it. Nothing like fresh, home-grown, ginger in the middle of winter for a cold-busting Hot Toddy!!

ugh with all these steps, i'll just buy ginger.

With a burlap bag you don't need to add any holes.
-
You could use a burlap bag for this project.

I don't think he answers any questions.
-
What is the BAG make of ?
-
Thank I will try this
-
Did you grow this using a Soilless medium only? I heard you mention topping of with soil after as the ginger shoots grow.

Nice! Thank you for the post. Do you have any adjustment suggestions for West Coast zone 4? We have flowering ginger that grows year-round in the ground. I tried the rhizome for that and it has no flavor or aroma, but it spreads like wildfire so I've put it in a nursery bucket for containment.

Do you put holes in the bottom of the bag plus how often do you water?
-
I would love to see a video of the harvest. Also, Why do you need to use that kind of soil?
-
no watering?
