I had 10 seeds and all 10 germinated. So, from my experience, they have a good germination rate.
-
That is a good deal for that tree that was 150 dollar those sell for 300 in Florida.
-
The oldest viable seed was the Judean Date Palm, carbon-dated to be some 2,000 years old, which germinated in 2005 and is now over 10 years old.

Thank you John! You give good information. I live in the Netherlands, but want to grow an orchard and vegetable garden in the desert in future, so I am orienting myself in all these other climate plants and trees.

I recently bought a house in So. Cal and have had a difficult time trying to rid my yard of that coyote gourd. Hundreds of tennis ball looking things scattered around, terrible smell from the leaves, and goats don't even care to eat it.

How can you determine what is a female or male dates palm??? and how can you get de different varieties?
-
Climate change will slowly bring all these great southern varieties up here.

Very nice video. Nice personality even without any B.S.

John, I'm trying hard to eat much more veggies/fruits than meat but I'm having trouble with the fact that despite eating a variety, I'm just having trouble with veggies. Its like my body is rejecting it. I'm not eating it all day or over-juicing or anything but I'm just getting a little tired of the veggie taste. I do eat some meat but I want my plate to be mostly green. Any suggestions? How do I become hooked on it like you so that I enjoy it more?

Flavor varies from tree to tree but the common queen palm has fruit that can taste fantastic and is not dried but is eaten ripe instead. The coyote gourd is similar to the wild buffalo gourd of southern cal. Incidently the buffalo gourd is one of the top plants being researched for arid regions due to it produces enormous amounts of starch, protein and oil per acre. (its root can be the size of a man) You can harvest its seeds and wash and then fry them in oil and they are an excellent food.

Date palms want 115 F temps to bear fruit. So I don't them here in FL. I was given on from a seed......I will probably never see fruit.

That's awesome. :) I can grow cactus here without even trying and get some lovely prickly pears yearly. They grow everywhere easily. I would love to grow date palms. I bet they would grow really well here. I like the sheet cover to protect it. I may have to do that with my accidentally grown Japanese Mulberry tree. I will leave some uncovered to let the birds eat them but I would like to eat a few myself so I will cover some this spring and see what happens. :) - Heidi
