Peak Oil News http://MrEnergyCzar.com This is Peak Oil News. I'm your host, MrEnergyCzar. We're covering Peak Oil, Renewable Energy, Electric Cars and everything in-between. • Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/MrEnergyCzar.PeakOil • Twitter: https://Twitter.com/MrEnergyCzar • Volkswagen has been in the news lately. They've announced the production of several new plug-in hybrids. They will produce a plug-in hybrid Golf in 2014. It is said to have an electric range close to the Volt's 38 miles. We'll know more later but my guess is it will have more of a 25 - 30 mile EPA rated electric range. • They will also be producing the XL1 plug-in diesel hybrid. It is a 261 mpg plug-in two-seater with a 31 all electric mile range. It looks eerily similar to GM's EV-1 from the 1990's. This may be due to having a low aerodynamic drag of just .19. The car is said to be able to cruise at 62 mile per hour while using a fuel sipping 8.3 horsepower. The car will have a two cylinder diesel engine paired with an electric motor. • In Lima Peru, water sources are polluted and it hardly rains. They made a billboard that sucks water out of the air and provides clean drinking water for families below. Engineers created a system that gathers the water through reverse osmosis. It is then purified and stored in tanks for the residents to use. This system takes advantage of Lima Peru's high humidity levels in the air. • Japan plans the world's largest offshore wind farm near Fukushima. Since the Fukushima incident, 52 nuclear reactors have remained closed in Japan. They plan to install 143 offshore wind turbines, close to Fukushima, so the existing abandoned grid connections can be utilized. I don't expect there to be any opposition to offshore wind like there is here in the states. The United States lags the world in terms of offshore wind because we have none. • China has admitted the existence of cancer villages. China allows industries to dump toxic chemicals into the environment, in the name of growth. Hundreds of villages in China are seeing unusually high cancer rates. China still uses many chemicals that are banned in most developed nations. Will the Chinese people reach a breaking point and start demanding that their government protect the air and water?
