Opium Farming - How do they do it ?
Opium is called “Afeem” in India and it is obtained from poppy plant- scientifically known as Papaver somniferum. Opium is dried latex obtained from the opium poppy i.e. fruit of this plant. Seeds of poppy, locally known as Khas-khas are sowed in the month of November. By February, the poppy plants are fruited enough to yield opium. At this time, farmers do rituals and pray for the good yield, and then collection of opium starts. Two special handmade instruments are used for opium collection “Nakhi” and “Sarapla”. This video shows how do the opium farmers harvest their opium crop.

The poppy flowers used to produce opium, ar basically a gift of God. It depends mainly on the way how the poppy is consumed. A poppy flower should never be scratched because the so-obtained viscid raw opium makes extremely addictive.
A poppy flower should only be earthed when it is already beginning to dry out. After the harvest, you should let the bud dry completely. Then the poppy seeds are separated from the capsule. These seedlings are sowings for coming seasons.
Now the capsule must get crushed and pulverize into a powder which is already a consumable form of opium.
If this powder is mixed with a lot of lemon juice or ascorbic acid, then the opium loses most of its drowsiness effect. The lemon juice makes an encouraging and awakening effect.
If the powder is mixed with vinegar and gypsum instead of the lemon juice,
then a very strong drug is formed, which can be used against very
severe pain. -
