In the morning session the student contingent along with subpoenaed Communist succeeded in disrupting the hearings. The Chairman Willas is forced to ask the police to eject Archie Brown, several students, and Merrill Bronski from the hearing room. Douglas Wachter, University of California Sophomore and Communist Party Member is called to testify. Douglas Wachter reads a prepared statement. He refuses to answer the question "are you a Communism Party Member?" At the noon recess of the Committee hearings a protect rally was held at Union Square. Two San Francisco City Assemblymen and a Clergyman bitterly denounce the House Committee On Un-American Activities hearings further inciting the students. The hearings and other business activities at City Hall are disrupted by the Student Committee for Civil Liberties and Communist Party members. Police remove Archie Brown, Saul Wachner, Morris Graham, Merrill Bronski, Juanita Wheeler, and Sally Sweet. On the second day of the hearings Friday, May 13, 1960 loud speakers are set up so spectators can hear the proceedings outside the city hall hearing room. The demonstration in the hallway outside the City Hall hearing room turns into a violent riot as police move in to restore order. Police use water hoses to force students demonstrators out of the building. Riot Police remove protestors one by one from City Hall and into waiting paddy wagons.
