The GAA meeting in Bangkok confirmed that a new shrimp virus - EMS or Early Mortality Syndrome, has had a significant impact on shrimp production in Vietnam and Thailand. The virus kills shrimp when they are 10-40 days old. Thailand production is down from 600,000 tons in 2010 to 500,000 tons in 2012, and Vietnam has also been severely affected. Right know the causative agent has not been identified, but the leading theory is a bacteria that is itself infected. The disease was first seen in China in 2010, Vietnam in 2011, and Thailand and Malaysia in 2012.
