New reforms allowing land owners in rural areas to transfer farmland is ongoing in China

China's move toward economic reform can be traced back to an agreement between farmers in Anhui Province’s Xiaogang village in 1978 to illicitly subdivide their common farmland, after which production of food increased dramatically. 38 years later, the village is also one of the first to initiate the country’s latest agricultural reforms, which allow land owners to transfer their farmland to companies or rural cooperatives.
