In Burma, a new specialty coffee origin is being discovered. Grown mostly by women smallholders in the mountains, Burma's previously unknown Arabica coffee varieties are beginning to stir international interest, with help from the USAID-funded Value Chains for Rural Development project, which began working with smallholder coffee farmers in the country in 2014. The project, implemented by Winrock International, provides market linkage assistance, training and support for best agricultural practices and improved post-harvest techniques, with the goal of increasing quality and helping small-scale farmers earn better incomes. The USAID project also supports soybean, ginger, melon and sesame farmers, with the goal of inclusively helping Burma’s smallholders connect to new markets and contribute to economic growth.
