Rice farmers in the expansive Mwea irrigation scheme in Kirinyaga county have adapted mechanized harvesting as a way to reduce operating costs and post-harvesting wastage. The farmers are now using combine harvesting machines imported by Mwea Multipurpose Cooperative Society from China. This is the first time rice farmers are using the technology to harvest their produce since the inception of the giant irrigation scheme more than 50 years ago.
