**Caution: This video features all the footage of a cow giving birth to a calf. If you don't want to see the process of calving, don't watch this video!** Here's a video of one of our cows, named Higgins, giving birth to a calf. Higgins (interestingly enough, she was named after one of the characters from the "Magnum, P.I." TV series...) has long been a family favorite on our small dairy farm here in Wisconsin. In the video, she is giving birth to her sixth calf. The time it took her to calve in real life was a bit longer than in this video, which I had edited down to save time. Everything went well with the calving, and as you will see she gave birth to healthy little calf. As you will also see in the video, the calf was born with some very thick membrane over most of its body. That's what the calf was in while inside the womb, and typically it would've ripped open earlier during calving. Sometimes it stays covering the calf like in the video, and lots of times in those circumstances the calf will die from suffocation if the mother is unable to 'lick' it off. Fortunately we were closely watching the calving and were there to remove it. However, in retrospect, I should've removed the membrane earlier than when I did because calves (if they are able) generally will take their first breath as they pass from the cow to the outside world. All ended well though! Thanks for watching! Hit "Subscribe" and "Like" us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/farmgrowncountrystrong/
