In April 2010 Animals Asia travelled to Shandong province to rescue 10 bears from a bear bile farm. The rescue made Shandong the 20th province to become bear farm free. On arrival the rescue team found bears suffering from a series of ailments such as an hernias and hyperkeratotic foot-pads (dry and cracked foot-pads). The bears had been kept for years - some of them up to 30 years - so that their bile could be extracted for use in traditional Chinese medicine.
