Molasses Food for The Soil ~ Noreen's Garden
Greetings! This week we are sharing the benefits of molasses for the soil! Molasses propagates and encourages good microbial activity in the soil and gives the beneficial bacteria something to feed on so it won't bother the roots of your plants. Thereby creating a sybiosis that can be super beneficial to your garden, your plants and the overall production of your garden. This time of year you may not be thinking of fertilizing the garden when putting it to bed, however once you get everything pulled up, ,knocked down and mulched over, this is the perfect time to give a broadcast feeding of this secondary fertilizer so that the good bacteria can continue to do their job under the surface of all that much and in the spring you will have soil that is ready and raring to go. Molasses is also a great additive to your compost bin or pile. Simply mix 1/4 cup of molasses per gallon of water and dump it on. This will help the good bacteria do their job of composting and breaking down the waste into good, usable soil or "black gold". In some parts of the country you may be able to get your hands on what is called agricultural molasses, which is used for fertilization purposes. I know that in some places you can take your own container and purchase it by the gallon for a much cheaper price than the culinary variety. However the regular grocery store variety of molasses works just fine as well! I hope you learned something that can be helpful to you in your garden this week! Go get some molasses and give it a try! Happy Planting! Check Out My Website: http://bit.ly/1qgxGqG Subscribe to Rick's Tips Channel for Home Improvement and DIY Tips! Thanks for the info now I know to use it (Molasses is fertilizer)

Noreen, where did you go? I see no new videos or Facebook posts since last year? Hope all is well.
-
Thanks Noreen. I use this and it definitely does make a difference. I vary the watering: sometimes I add my fish fertilizer and molasses to the water, other times I add Epsom salts and molasses., It's a great boon for me as I do container gardening.

Molasses makes no sense. Nature doesn't feed microbes sugar like that. Plants don't need sugar. Rather than artificially feeding microbes sugar to produce the nutrients that the plant wants just artificially give the plants the nutrients that they want. Or as nature does, compost and give the plants what they want naturally.

Won't we attract ants in the compost especially fire ants?
-
Is this good for a hydroponics garden?

Use the molasses and mix it up with worm-castings or mycorrhiza, rhizobia..or what ever you can find. Preferdably making a "tea" using a bucket and an aquarium airpump. That way you're making sure you're feeding the good bacteria and fungi first.

I come from a long line of dirt farmers. sweet tea, one we drink and one to water with. out of a garden 25ft X 200ft I can feed my family and yours and your neighbors. I highly recommend the grandma's brand because when I called to discus their product they were all very friendly and informative. Good post, keep them coming.

Noreen, have always had a fantastic garden in the front of my house...but the last 2 or so years i can't grow decent flowers. Would really like to get my Magellan Zinnias back there again but i think here is something depleted in my soil...Have always used Miracle Grow (Bloom Formula) every 2 weeks and they literally STOPPED traffic!.....What do you think?...has the Miracle Gro killed off the microrganisms and benifical bacteria in my soil?....what can i do to enrich and get my soil alive again?

Hi Noreen,so i dont have to use Bacstrap Molasses?
Good info thanks -
This I never knew, but my friend just told me she started adding iron to her soil.. there is ton of iron in molasses.. maybe this is the connection..hmm Going to try this

Molasses is just readily available sugars for the plant and gives a flourish of fresh growth as the tree/plant does not have to photosynthesize and use energy to create sugar. a healthy plant can fight of pathogens much better than an un healthy plant.

Hi Can you tell me some remedy for my egg plants. There is tiny little black insect. I sprayed neem oil and water mixtures. Is this enough or should I do something else.

Thanks for this gardening tip, Noreen. I had never heard of it before, and now I am going to try it in my own garden and in my compost. It makes perfect sense the way that you explain it.
