Full Story: In a shocking incidence of violence on Wednesday (December 26), an angry mob in India charred to death a tea estate owner and his wife. Around 200 tea plantation workers attacked the couple with sharp implements and set their residence on fire. Police say, the victims' bodies have been burned and cannot be recognized. Media reports say, over the past two months, differences had surfaced between the tea garden management and the laborers, and salaries were suspended. There were also reports of the owner attempting to molest a girl working in the gardens. Due to poverty, both men and women in the area are forced to work on the tea estates for a living. Recent legislation on labor laws have done little to improve working conditions for the tea garden workers. They make only the equivalent of one U.S. dollar and 71 cents (90 rupees) after the government increased their pay this year.
