Microsoft's underwater datacenter: Project Natick
Introducing Microsoft Project Natick, a Microsoft research project to manufacture and operate an underwater datacenter. The initial experimental prototype vessel, christened the Leona Philpot after a popular Xbox game character, was operated on the seafloor approximately one kilometer off the Pacific coast of the United States from August to November of 2015. Project Natick reflects Microsoft’s ongoing quest for cloud datacenter solutions that offer rapid provisioning, lower costs, high responsiveness, and are more environmentally sustainable. Learn more about the project from our blog http://news.microsoft.com/?p=276011 and http://www.projectnatick.com.

Definitely a publicity stunt!

Sounds very expensive. Why not just put it on a hill next to the ocean?
-
because EARTH is FLAT and there are NO satellites in "SPACE". Did you know they fake space walks in water pools?! Your satellites are on weather balloons, ground based towers, troposcatter and more globe earth fakery.

Stupid Microsoft employees. Waste of money

good luck changing a drive >_<

I wonder if it changes the underwater-environment if you heat up the seas with the waste heat?

Uhhh lets take a good look at what was accomplished and at what cost. Accessibility and so on and so on. Why not take this equipment, shed its packaging, all the water pieces and all the cost associated with digging this baby up, and not to mention the dangers involved in under water sports here and that I'm sure its water systems are going to need attention almost all the time and set it in ALASKA . Cooling is in an abundant supply. See below:Following is the average monthly temperature range in Alaska: Month: High / Low Jan: 22.2 / 9.3Feb: 25.8 / 11.7Mar: 33.6 / 18.2Apr: 43.9 / 28.7May: 54.9 / 38.9Jun: 62.3 / 47.0Jul: 65.3 / 51.5Aug: 63.3 / 49.4Sep: 55.0 / 41.4Oct: 40.0 / 28.3Nov: 27.7 / 15.9Dec: 23.7 / 11.4Ann: 43.1 / 29.3Now I'm no engineer but some where you need to use some common sense.Liebert precision cooling with the free cooling option for may through august but the rest of the time the raised floor is gunna require probably no cooling what so ever but maybe a little hot water heating for the boys and girls in the noc. It doesn't do anything for the hot environmental areas I know. But accessability is a real ordeal. Hells bells, bury the damn thing in underground cave, caverns and get some what the same results. Underwater I'm not feelin this AT ALL!. Next thing youll need SPACE X to run a service call!

2:09 Microsoft research uses Google Chrome instead of Internet Explorer or even Edge haha! we all now know chrome is really more dev/scientist friendly while IE/Edge is more enterprise friendly

What about hardware faults?

this is the dumbest shit ive ever seen, i could only imagine the amount of money it would cost to change out a hard drive if one were to fail.

How The power is going to be there in the middle of ocean for that datacenter.

how you replace the faulty hdd or other hardware issue ? seems like a very expensive way for maintenance
