At Surge's (surgeactivism.com) London Fashion Week anti-fur demonstration, a member of the public paraded around with an entire dead mink over his shoulders. He refused to watch the footage of fur farms and shrugged off what he did see. Every member of the public I pointed the fur item out to was disgusted by it and and voiced their shock and outrage. There is a misconception that fur consumption is declining when, in fact, it is on the rise. The number of designers who use fur has dramatically increased, climbing from 42 in 1985 to approximately 500 today (FICA). FICA also asserts that 55% of the people who buy fur today are under 44, dispelling the myth that fur is primarily consumed by older people. The production of fur is responsible for 50 million deaths every year, these animals are anally electrocuted, gassed to death or have their heads caved in with metal rods as they are the most inexpensive forms of slaughter and stop the fur from being damaged. The animals also are often skinned whilst still alive - it is not an exaggeration to claim that the fur industry is one of the worst on the planet. In China, the world's largest fur exporter, cats and dogs are also used. Slaughtered by the millions and sold in the West where it is mislabelled so people think they are buying the skin of one animal when in fact it belongs to a dog or cat. This means that millions of fur items sold in the West are actually the furs taken from dogs and cats. The production of fur is also incredibly damaging for humans and the environment as harmful chemicals are used to stop the fur from rotting, consequently this can lead to illness in the humans who handle the chemicals and also dangerous water contamination and other environmental degradation. In essence to wear fur means that not only do you believe that you are better than the animals that are murdered but also the humans and the environment that both suffer as a consequence of the fur industry. People used to be terrified to wear fur on the streets for fear of embarrassment by vigilant activists who would not stand for these atrocities. This has to be reintroduced, people need to feel ashamed and fearful of wearing fur. Calling people out on the street is the most effective form of activism against the use of fur by the public and if we ever want to abolish it from our streets this is what we have to do. We cannot allow society to normalise the use of fur and as such, we have to make sure that those who wear it are educated about what they are wearing and if they still don't care they have to be confronted. If you disagree with this form of activism against fur then watch these videos and then you'll understand why it needs to be called out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLcgxIGTFRs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__0dbq9dkPI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avXwGAp0Onc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDwMeUNcimA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xKbldQmMqM Support my activism by becoming part of my Patreon team! ➞ https://www.patreon.com/earthlinged e m a i l ➞ earthlingedward@gmail.com i n s t a g r a m ➞ @earthlinged t w i t t e r ➞ @earthling_ed www.earthlinged.com www.surgeactivism.com 101 REASONS TO GO VEGAN! http://bit.ly/1wEdBQn
