How To Build A Self Watering Rain Gutter Grow System!!!! Ok so you want to build a Rain Gutter Grow System! Here is what you will need! 2 10 ft treated 2x4's 1 10 ft rain gutter and 2 end caps.I prefer the U snap brand http://www.menards.com/main/building-... because you can use standard pvc cement to glue on the ends. You will need 3 inch net cups http://www.hydroponics.net/i/211100 they are cheap! Drill a 2/78 inch hole in your container that you are going to plant in and the 3 inch net cup fits perfectly. Also you'll need some pole barn roofing screws because they have a water tight seal on them. also a mini float valve to regulate water http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item... I use the one with the male 1/2 inch threads and buy a 1/2 threaded garden hose adapter to connect to it. You also can get the 3/8 barbed version and some 3/8 plastic hose and daisy chain a bunch together. You can use any good potting mix to grow your veggies in Not potting soil! Miracle grow potting mix works great or you can mix your own by using 2/3rds peat moss and 1/3 well rotted manure or compost and a couple of good handfuls of perlite! It lightens the soil. I also add about a cup of garden lime or dolomite, I also throw in a handful of Epsom salts. A standard batch I will make would be 2 5 gallon buckets of peat 1 bucket of compost or well rotted manure 1 cup garden lime and a handful Epsom salts. It has worked great for me Here is a link to the video on how I built the unit! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1kIaJ... Good Luck and let me know how you like the system! If you have any question please message me! Larry

can you use it for monkey cups

is the lime good for carrots and leafy greens?
-
gday Larry what quantities of lime and epsom salt do i use per bag of miracle grow
-
Instead of Perlite, you can also use Vermiculite.
Home Depot now carries large bags of Vermiculite. -
you can use rice hulls instead of perlite then you can reuse soil
-
What size coffee can? 3# or 5# or some other size?

FYI: the magazine Canadian Gardner did a study on manure;; which one packs more punch per cup....chickenshit won! sheep were next.

I used horse manure from the horses we have in pasture and found that (or at least suspect ) the feed we use, had been sprayed with a broad spectrum surfactant during the growing season of the grain feed. Turns out some of the grain growers for feed graineries are now using the Monsantos type round up surfactant (Glyphosate) to control vegitation before harvest. It ended up coming through in the manure,... so people may want to make sure their compost w/manure doesn't have contaminants in it... just a thought

Your own shit will only do well if you eat good food and plenty of green stuff:p

I added Epsom Salt to Miracle Grow and some Osmocote Flower and Vegetable Fertilizer, which is suitable for edible plants and flowers. My plants grew fast, green and hardy. What I did notice, though. is that some herbs, like parsley grew so tall and sturdy, they no longer had that soft texture of the leaves and the flavor was very strong. I might add a little lime to some of my potting mix and cut back slightly on the Epsom Salt. I appreciate theses tips you give. Next year, I will try to mix up my own potting soil from scratch. I bought Perlite from Home Depot.

That's not inexpensive. I would rather buy potting soil from the dollar store.

Can i use pelletilized lime ? Thats all i can find around here . Thanks and great video .

for my gardening friends

I would add more perlite or vermiculate, but it's the most expensive part of soil.
-
Hey larry sorry if this is has already been asked but have you ever checked your ph of your mixture?
-
Larry I use foam from packing crates in my blender to make my perlite ta put in my soil and it works

Love the vids larry but I follow your methods and my mix gets really hard. What am I doing wrong. I have tried two ways where i moisten the peat first before mixing with compost(Cow Humus) and the other way of just adding it all together dry and watering the whole mix at the end. Both methods result in a hard mix. I have tried a 50-50 mix and a mix of 2 parts peat and one part compotst with perlite. Am I adding too much Peat because it seems that it is the part that gets hard and compact.
-
Do you use this same mixture in the grow bags? I'm not sure if its different since the bags get more air.
-
