I wonder how they treat Westerners in these half-abandoned hamlets? I know that in the cities the attitudes range from polite aloofness to open hostility, but it's also a much more competitive environment and where all the annoying tourists go. I'm amazed that they're just giving houses away to anyone who'll keep the brush cut back and I'm even more amazed that this Australian guy has been treated so well.
If they're relatively nice to Westerners in the depleted countryside, I don't think I'd mind disappearing there for a life working during the day and writing/meditating in the evenings. I've always wanted to try the ascetic life without having to join an actual monastery.
I'd probably have to learn Japanese but it's really not that difficult from what I've seen. Anyhow, I'd be far enough away from the weeaboos in Tokyo that no one would mistake me for one even if my Japanese isn't great. -
I am surprised how unmechanized the rice growing is in Japan. That is your problem right there. You have 17th century farming jobs competing literally right next to 21st tech jobs. If the Japanese government wants to encourage farming it should invest in researching small machines that are ideal for using terraced farmland. Maybe a combination of solar cells and small electronic devices. Even a little mechanization would really improve the productivity.
Look closely, this kind of farming doesn't even utilize the wheel. It is almost willfully backward. -
That is some awesome life

Thanks for taking the time to show us the beauty of rural Japan. It's an eye-opener. I have land on the border of wilderness- that is where I and some of my friends come alive. Some people freak out at the vastness and stillness though. I haven't figured out how to afford to live there fulltime--- hard to do it alone. I'm learning to be a farrier so... maybe...

What the fuck is wrong with you shit ass people, always some thing to do with some shit ass jesus who could not save his own ass.

Its just not Japan, its all Asian countries giving up agriculture for fast money in cities.
-
Agree with your idea, but if they grow fruits, they will have to take them to city to sell themselves. Most fruits and veg come from outside and very difficult to compete with them. So, they grown rice and ship them off in bulk to the local distributor.

I wish to be there

I agree, god is real and jesus is returning soon. Choose him.

I feel you! I have the good woman, and we want this life so much. If you have the will and the state of mind, you will find a good woman and this dream could easily become a reality. Good Luck in all you do and I wish all of the great fortune life has to offer upon you my friend

What will we eat if nobody likes farming. I think govt shud do something to motivate people to not leave their hometowns and agriculture. They shud also earn well.
