Add fish to the area, the fish eat the bugs and weeds and fertilize the rice.

Really good info, Rick. I wonder if wild rice would grow in Southern Colorado? 7600 ft. alt. and arid, cold in winter. Did you start with seed? Thanks for the knowledge you are passing on.

tiny bit of chicken manure on there and you're good

G'day Rick, you mentioned Bill saying growing wild rice with a lot of biomass... I am interested in hearing your strategy for doing this in your pond... besides throwing in some more sod... or would that be a viable solution?... cheers

will this live in a 5B zone?

That is really interesting. I did not know rice could grow wild in a cold climate. Are you fully self sustaining with as much as you grow? I know I have a long ways to go to reach that level. I need a place like you have in the woods or where ever it is. That has no walnut trees on it. LOL. I have to bring in resources from my daughter to build compost. Or add oak leaves to cover the garden for winter. But, the soil gets better ever year. Thanks for sharing all you do. You inspire me to keep going.

rice is pretty intensive, i am basically trying to do the same thing with sorghum, while its hardy and produces, i would have to grow a few acres of it to be able to make it worth while. I keep thinking bout ben falks paddies with the duck rotations, that brings fertility. i wonder how much rice you would get if you planted the whole pond.
