Thanks for the great information, the location I plan for this plant get dapple sun, early morning and then late in the afternoon. Is that suitable for this plant? Will it flower well?

Great info - thanks! I think I'll try one. I live in FL and we have nothing but draining soil so it might do OK.

Forgot most important thing about it,it dislikes all chemical fertiliser the roots burn even dilute, it simply gives up, going brown at the ends of branches then the whole thing dies like a dead xmas tree.Use fertiliser formulated for native shrubs(if in new Zealand)or organic stuff low in phosphate if not, like blood and bone meal or fish meal etc. Similaerly it hates chemical insecticides sprayed or drenched. Note all Australian,NZ natives have these same requirments so easy to remember.

Im wondering if Jef is seeing dead and dying ones a lot because they also dont like icy cold wet windy winter conditions. Border line hardy so in fact prefer winter shelter and warmth. Though they def dont like no drainage like clay pan but just ordinary drainage is a winner.I would say well worth the effort but not a stick in the hole and go type plant unless you live in the sub-tropics or a very temperate climate. They dont do well in Southern Florida either heat and humidity combo is lethal.

As far as size is concerned "in design" this is not a problem for even very small gardens as they prune very well. Jeff mentions size and then at the end pruning. On pruning I completely disagree they prune very easily into very low hedges, high ones what ever you wish, cute standards like roses etc. In fact pruning is recommended it prevents wind damage, being brittle they crack & sprawl even if they dont die. They hate humidity and dont like temps bellow 41. Just ordinary drainage is fine no clay!
