Legend of Zelda -- ゼルダの伝説 -- Horse Race -- 競馬 piano sight-read by Tom Brier
Yes, this is his first time seeing or hearing the music. I've had countless requests to give Tom music from the Zelda series, but there is no ragtime in it as far as I know (having never played the games). However, I was informed of a couple tunes that could translate into ragtime. This sort of bluegrass fiddle tune translates the best. The arrangement I was shown comes from a songbook published in Japan. The arrangements in there are way oversimplified. They don't even do the right bass notes, and the melodies are in single notes. You'll notice on the score here a few penned-in corrections that I had thrown in. But the simplified score meant that Tom was more free to fill it in his own way, much like the popular video of him riffing off the Birabuto Kingdom theme. The result is a great big yee-haw romp! The tune was composed by Koji Kondo -- 近藤浩治 -- and appears both in Majora's Mask -- ムジュラの仮面 -- and The Ocarina of Time -- 時のオカリナ.

He is adding so much embellishment to that sheet music that it's not even funny, lmao. The music calls for like quarter notes and is way simpler than how Tom plays it. Tom takes it up like ten levels and God bless him for it

I've been watching alot of your videos for quite some time now, especially tom, and he has become a center of inspiration for me to learn how to freaking do this
-
How the..?? That is insane

If this were the theme to a TV show in the 70's or 80's, the waltz version would be the "alternate" theme that plays during the end credits.
-
He did the original and the waltz version!<3
IT'S LIKE THE WIN AND THE LOSE -
a quien no le gustara esto

Epona Pony be proud!
And also redneck Link with his Slingshot.
1:59 oooh man this is the perfect salon music, I'd really like to listen a real piano player doing this part of the song with a jar of whiskey in my hand, sitting in a saloon. -
Why did show how it would be written in Japanese, weeb.

Hey there keeper1st. I was wondering if you would be able or willing to make a transcription of this video like the mario land one you did(which was a gift to the world). I would be willing to pay you for it or commission it. Your ability to transcribe what Tom plays is astounding. Your very professional clearly. I have no idea if you'll get this message but man a transcription of Tom's version of the horse race would be amazing. I'd be very grateful to talk over email about it. Thanks- Danny

This guy is a legend!

I'm convinced that after watching all of Tom's Sight-reading videos at least 50 times each that he is probably one of the only people that can do the theme from pokemon D/P/Pt before you battle the champion it's not really ragtimey but I feel like it would be cool to see it be performed in real life

his hands look like on of those old black and white movies where it doesn't speak and everything looks fast and fake haha.. good job :)
-
If they remaster Ocarina of Time....they should use this arrangement.....

Tom is so cool! He improvises so naturally, it's scary. These videos inspired me to start piano again; I played for 10 years and then took a break for 2.
-
I love how he starts playing with the music, adding that touch.

amazing

You can really tell how this is all child's play for him, he's massively improvising even on his first rep through. Bet you a lot of the rags he's used to are quite a bit more difficult, but it's still absurdly impressive.
