Leela Rai - Punjabi-Mexican-American From Yuba City In California
Punjabi-Mexican-Americans of California have been around for over 100 years. Due to legal hurdles Punjabi farmers from India often married Latina women on the West Coast, especially in California and Arizona. Meet Leela Rai of Yuba City (near Sacramento), who traces her family history to Mexico and Punjabi in India. Leela is 3rd generation Punjabi-Mexican American, who grew up in the farming community of Yuba City, where her father was a successful farmer. Some of the earliest immigrants from India arrived in California nearly 100 years ago. Many of them settled down in Yuba City and became farmers. Sadly, Leela passed away in April 2015 and this was the last interview she did.She was very passionate about her Latina and Indian heritage and was a walking wikipedia about her small and vibrant community in Yuba CIty, CA. This is not uncommon from the 1700's up until 1947. Indian Indus Kush civilization totally collapsed there was a great migration of people out of India the majority of them being North Indians from Punjab.

I am Canadian of Punjabi ethnicity and as a child sometime in the late 1950's / early 60's... I believe, I met a Uncle and Aunty who came from California. I think they had four daughters. I am the eldest and at that time we were four sisters. Of course all of us girls played together. Our parents visited. The visiting Uncle and Auntie were from California. Aunty I recall did not speak punjabi, she was Mexican. I often wondered about this family who had so many girls like us. I grew up in a small town called Mission, in province of British Columbia, Canada. This is the home where the the visit took place. I was impressed because I believed the girls spoke three languages, Punjabi, Spanish and English. I think Leela Rai may be one of the girls!
