Punjabi-Mexican-Americans of California have been around for over 100 years. Due to legal hurdles Punjabi farmers from India often married Latina women on the West Coast, especially in California and Arizona. Meet Leela Rai of Yuba City (near Sacramento), who traces her family history to Mexico and Punjabi in India. Leela is 3rd generation Punjabi-Mexican American, who grew up in the farming community of Yuba City, where her father was a successful farmer. Some of the earliest immigrants from India arrived in California nearly 100 years ago. Many of them settled down in Yuba City and became farmers. Sadly, Leela passed away in April 2015 and this was the last interview she did.She was very passionate about her Latina and Indian heritage and was a walking wikipedia about her small and vibrant community in Yuba CIty, CA.
