Kenya's tea production has more than tripled over the last decade, from a low of 47 million kilograms to 127 million kilograms in 2012. But according to the industry regulator the tea board of kenya, this production is not enough to service the ever growing demand for the black kenyan tea in the world market. The pressure to provide for this increased demand has now forced the tea board to put up a team of researchers to come up with a more resistant variety of tea that can grow beyond the traditional tea growing zones in the country. So far kenya is ranked the third highest producer of tea in the world behind china and india who produce 1.5 billion kilograms and 1 billion kilograms of tea respectively in a year. Kenya is also looking for ways of producing the green, purple and white tea who's demand in the world market has also been on the rise in the last few years.
