A strong Japanese farming lobby wanted no part of the partnership, fearing competition from cheaper food imports. Al Jazeera's Rob McBride reports from Nagoya, Japan. Cheers to the government that understands that self reliance holds much more economic and social value than superficially cheaper produce.

Food, just like water and energy, is a strategic asset so every country strives to be as self-sufficient as possible in these areas and completely unrestricted free trade can negatively affect local producers. However, a better solution than closing off the local market is to subsidize them in order to make them price-competitive. That's what most countries do anyway...

i wont comment on ur actual intelligence but i will say ur perceived intelligence makes our country look bad as a whole, so il ask u to think bout ur country when u use childish comments on adult conversations such as this, please and thank you from NY

Of course Japanese farmers reject free trade, look what it's done to the west? We can't compete with people earning less than us, so "ALL" our jobs now have gone to the poor country's! Now these poor people over seas now are literally slaves with, "suicide nets" The results everyone is poor the whole world is going broke!

Japanese farmers are like mafia. They feed japan substandard food and wont let any healty competition with foreign farm products. My wife in Japan tells me they grow mangoes that dont even taste like magoes. Countires like Japan are capitalist as long as it does not hurt the interests of the Japanese gangs called corporations.

what in the fuck is that immigrant aussie doin over there?

You're displaying your ignorance there's a difference between Japan and China. Japanese farmers don't want what's happened to the U.S. farmers, ultimately big corporation comes in and monopolizes and forces out small business Walmart ring a bell?

I wouldn't be so sure... plus it's all leaking into the ocean as well, so their fish is contaminated too. I have friends in Tokyo who said they felt sick at the time of the meltdown, so who knows how far this stuff travels.
