Jan Sansad - GM Crops: Advantages and apprehensions
Adoption of Genetically Modified (GM) crops in the mainstream farming is a highly debated topic. On one hand it promises food security in the times of food shortage and climate change but on the flip side it is said that it is a brazen attempt to monopolise the food chain and would create havoc by replacing the natural order with an unnatural, human engineered variety. Being a major agrarian country, GM crops have found their way to the doorstep of India where a similar debate is being held on its adoption, right from the farmers in the sowing fields to the Parliament. In this edition of Jan Sansad, we travel to Nagpur in Maharashtra and try to understand the concept of GM crops and get views from various perspectives considering the India context. The GM crops introduction in the country must be regulated by the govt through the high level expert committee..The concerns of food safety, biodiversity and environmental implications must be adressed through the statutory body constituted by the govt in a specified time frame. The agricultural universities must be actively involved in testing and experimentation before particular GM crop is recommended for adoption. The production of the seeds of the GM crops locally in the country must be encouraged and the protocols of technology transfers must be developed so that long time interests of the farmers and the country are protected.
