The Embassy decided to spend funds allocated for an event to mark Israeli National Day on May 16, on upgrading the facilities in the village of Xiao Liu Ge Zhuang. STORYLINE : The village of Xiao Liu Ge Zhuang, 70 kilometres (47 miles) south east of Beijing city, has a long history. For more than 500 years people have lived here, and tilled the fields. But now the local agriculture has been given a boost. The latest in greenhouse technology has been brought to the village, which has a population of 1,300, that's some 300 families. The project is funded by the Israeli Embassy. In previous years the Israeli Embassy in Beijing celebrated Israeli National Day on May 16, with a lavish party. But this year the embassy decided to spend the budget normally allocated to the celebrations by adopting a chinese village, and therefore boosting the local economy.
