Isaan Tours (http://isaantours.com/) shares the customs, religion and traditions of rural Thailand and is hosted by the bloggers of http://live-less-ordinary.com/. We explore Nang Rong a small town near the borders of Cambodia in Buriram Province (Isaan) where local life is rich and authentic. We start early morning with monks performing Bintabaht (alms collection) before we show a demonstration of chewing betel ‘nut’ a popular past-time with the gummy old grannies living in rural Thailand (full details on Betel here http://wp.me/p2OQPP-585). Next we jump on a weird tricycle cart to go work the rice fields of rural Thailand ploughing the turf, planting the rice and feeding the local buffalos which, while previously used for the heavy lifting, are now used to eat grass and produce fertilizer. Next we explore food with local Som Tam’s (Papaya Salads) along with other breakfast favourites of Kai Yang, grilled chicken and Jok, rice porridge (here for our blog on Isaan Food http://wp.me/p2OQPP-4Wh). We then poke around the home garden highlighting the self-sustainable living of locals in Isaan and the type of people who live in this quiet neighbourhood. In the evening we visit the local market which happens every Sunday in the small Isaan town of Nang Rong with some delicious and some less palatable foods on show; from the famous Durian (stinky fruit) to deep fried insects and medicinal liquors (here for our blog on local moonshine http://wp.me/p2OQPP-66i). We then join the home again where grannyThip cooks a pumpkin curry using authentic cooking techniques over a charcoal and coconut fired stove. After eating grilled fish from the market, and granny’s pumpkin curry we eat again with the younger generations living in rural Isaan with their favourite Moo Krata Thai barbecue which cooks meats and soups on charcoal flamed skillets. Ending the night we run round the block on the motorbike to see local night life in Isaan or more the lack of it. Life is quiet and simple in rural Thailand. Before travelling back to Bangkok the elders of Fanfan’s family offer Sai Sin bracelets which have been blessed by local monks living in rural Thailand (here for our blog on Sai Sin bracelets http://wp.me/p2OQPP-5e9).
