Introduction to Draft Animal Power
This is the first video in a series where farmer and teamster Donn Hewes of Northland Sheep Dairy in Marathon, NY demonstrates how draft horses and mules are integrated into his farm operation. This video was filmed and edited by Peter Carroll of Peter Carroll Productions in Ithaca, NY and funded by the generous contributors to our Small Farm Videos Indiegogo campaign. This video resource is offered by the Cornell Small Farms Program.

Amazing, I love this video. In the future I want to buy some draft horses. How expensive are they?

Have them pull you on a sled in the winter

Your animals are a credit to you. I hope the Suffolk Punch are prospering in the US as they are struggling as a UK breed, which is such a shame. We had a prison farm using them, but change of policy meant another nail in their coffin. A shame for the prisoners too. Are the mules a Percheron cross? They are HUGE.

Thank you so much for posting this. Well-done and inspiring video for those who are thinking of getting into this. I am from Alabama and remember farming with my grandfather on his Ford 8n. Our neighbor still farmed with mules and I was always amazed at how they worked. We are considering buying a small farm and working with draft animals.

I wish i could live and work like you people do, but i live in the Netherlands , where its overcrowded and restricted for everything, and now they destroy our country by taken in those vermints from the Eastern countries! i have had it with my country!!!

Wonderful video. I just loved seeing you work with these beautiful animals. Congratulations on continuing some fine traditions. I hope they don't die out.

I love watching a well-tuned team with a knowledgeable handler. We don't currently have any horses for work or pleasure, and since we're down to only 25 acres I don't know if we'll ever have them again. I really miss it, but teaching goats to pull small carts has taken my mind off missing the horses. Thanks for a great video!

Where can draft horse equipment be purchased these days? Drills, mowers, plows, etc. Is it all at auction or is there a company making new equipment?

Excellent presentation. Thanks for posting!

You forgot to mention the Clydesdale and Shire in the large draft category. Mine are exceptionally strong and terrific animals.

So someone says, "Poor horses." No, those are horses who are enjoying their work. Ears are forwards, mostly.

I'm so glad someone realizes horses are more than racing for trophies with their 'best buddy'.
God gave us horses to help and be there for us. Horses are more than your friend, they're your family. -
Poor horses.
