Thanks for the detailed documentary on Indian cows. These facts and fates of authentic farming brings light towards helplessness of farmers and consumers. Also creates a spark of inspiration to bring back the traditional way of organic farming. I lived in New Zealand for 8 years and now living in Qatar, I hope and wish to be a part of the organisations which are sincerely working towards this great purpose to bring back health and wellbeing through organic farming.
Thanks again, keep up good work. -
Great documentary. Some corrections;
1. Brahman breed was not developed in Brazil. It was developed in USA using Indian cattle. It is primarily used for beef production there. Brazil has developed Girolando by crossing Holstein with Gir, Indubrasil by crossing Gir, Kankrej and Ongole apart from other breeds of cattle. Moreover, Indian breeds are also raised as purebred animals there and are selectively bred so that they perform better than the original Indian breeds themselves. In this context, Gyr from Gir breed, Nelore from Ongole breed, Sindi from Red Sindhi have been upgraded by selective breeding there. Currently, nearly 90% of the Brazilian beef industry is catered to by Nelore breed and 80% of the dairy industry is catered to by the Girolando breed. The focus in Brazil is now on upgrading the Sindi breed. India has a lot to learn from the focused Brazilian breeding programs.
2. The distinction between Rath and Rathi has been mixed up a bit. The Rath breed is closely related to Hariana, Mewati and Nagore cattle breeds and is primarily kept for draught purposes by the Rath tribe in Rajasthan. The Rathi breed although from the same region (Bikaner, Ganganagar) as the Rath, is a mixture of Sahiwal and Tharparkar breeds and as such is a very good milker as opposed to the Rath breed. -
Thank you for putting this effort for making this documentary. I am from Malaysia, Indian origin. Its great to know about Indian cow breeds.
