How To Save Rose Seeds From Rose Hips
In this video I will show you how I save rose seeds. The best time of year is to wait until the hips have turned color for a month or two. In southern Oregon, that's around late Oct. I also like to wait until a good frost has set. If we haven't gotten a frost by late Oct, I will go ahead and pick them anyways. I pull the hips apart and extract the seeds. I rinse them off and dry them on a paper plate for a couple of weeks. Then I put them into a plastic ziplock and store in a cool dry place. You can choose to stratify them for the winter by placing them in the fridge for a few months. I've never done that but it is certainly worth a try. As a kid we used rose seeds like itching powder. Those fine hairs around the seeds are remarkably aggravating when they are poured down the back of a shirt, against the skin!

Hi I have a question how do you know when you have several seats of colored roses that has hip-seeds like black rose hip or white rose hip & so on?

if never had seeds

Make sure that the hips are mature that is ready to be taken from the bush. The seeds after removed from the hips, require to be dry. Leave then, some where to well dry, otherwise not all will be good to germinate.

Finally, now I know! I'm always searching for cost savings measures, therefore wish to collect my own seeds. I'd like to try the rose hip tea and eventually try my luck with becoming an Heirloom gardener. I'd imagine peony seeds are collected in about this same manner?

interesting video (as usual). I really like you channel and I think you method for germinating seed is the right one. Even if there is a good chance that floating seeds will not germinate, it's not 100%. Same thing with sinking ones: there is no 100% chance they are good.

ye man ive had very little success germinating seeds i mean very little!! lol i bought my seeds from ebay that could be the reason tho lol. this year im attempting a new way by getting the from already growing bushes and ive decided to leave them until now to gather them.. that is that the hips have a range of colours to see whats best theres still orange and red ones and plenty of brown hips trying to see if mother nature will stratify them for me :)

I look forward to your upcoming videos on how to make rose hip tea. Fall of 2014 I decided I wanted to make a rose hip oil infusion. I live in Wisconsin, zone 5. I picked WILD ROSE HIPS after a freeze. Boy are they small compared to your rose hips. They are the size of unpopped popcorn kernels. There was no way I was going to cut & seed them the way you did your HUGE rose hips. Besides I was making an oil infusion. I just crushed/smushed them and placed them in a jar covered with olive oil. Let it set for 6 weeks in a dark cabinet. I am using the oil as a moisturizer. To buy rose seed oil is so expensive, so this is my version. This Summer I would also like to make rose water with the pedals. I wonder if it is like making tea. Thank you for sharing your tips & techniques.

In the video you say you make rose hip tea. My question is can you make it from any variety of rose or does it have to be a certain one?

Hi, I just followed your instructions on the seeds. I now have quite a few seeds that i stored in a bottle. I live in san antonio, tx - can you tell me when i should start planting the seeds? This is the first time trying this. A lady had a beautiful rose bush and noticed it had bulbs on it. She let me have a few. They were an orange color. It stays rather warm here (80s now) except maybe Dec-Feb. I would appreciate any instructions you can give me. Thanks
