How to prune basil. Harvesting basil (thinning, pruning)
Organic basil will fill your garden with a beautiful aroma when it is handled, it will also fill the meals you use it in with exceptional flavor. Basil can be eaten fresh, made into a soothing tea and even dried for preservation as an herbal seasoning for later use in cooking. I have dehydrated basil from last year in my cupboard and it still smells and tastes amazing! This video discusses basil and how to trim it (also referred to as pruning) in a way that won't cause damage to the plant and will allow it to continue growing. Growing basil is very rewarding not only for those who enjoy eating it, but for other plants as well. Basil is a herb that makes a good companion plant for tomatoes as they tend to repel destructive tomato hornworms. Basil is an easy plant to grow and is quite hardy. Just give your basil plants ample water and sunlight, and watch it grow!

You know, it was surprisingly hard to find detailed explanations on how to trim for use. Thanks for the excellent info!

Thanks. I'm making vegan avocado pesto and grow my basil on my deck this year. Last year in the garden it grew like trees; these deck basil plants are a bit thinner. So, again, thanks.

any idea why my big leave basil plant (like yours) has become tiny leaves! and also the stems are brown and dry, opposed to green and juicy, is it lack of water in Florida heat?

I got two bushes of basil I seed planted in my perennial patch.
But after you said horn worms hate it. I'm going to intersperse it next year with my tomatoes.
I'm also going to surround my garden next year with a raised row of dill, garlic, basil, peppers, marigolds and other plants that are natural deterrents to pests. -

I purchased my basil from a local nursery a little early this year and now they are nearly 18 inches tall. It's only June and I've never had a basil plant this far along so early in the season.
Do you think if I continue trim the flowers that I can keep them going all season or should I plant a fresh batch?
