How to Compost Chicken Manure

1. Can anyone tell me how many days to make the chicken manure ready to use ?
2. I was told that chicken manure needs to "cook in the sun" for a while before adding it to a compost pile. Do you agree with this? What do you recommend?

5. Another question: I have a good size pile of chicken poo but its winter here in Indiana . How do I work with it when its cold ?I clean my chicken coop and run almost every week . I use sand to make it easy to clean. it works well but I got a pile that gets fresh poo almost every week .Can ya compost it in the winter? If so do I still try to them it every couple of days?
6. What kinda grass do you have here, they seem to be low maintenance and don't grow much, they are almost like carpet.

8. This is pretty much how I do it. I make my compost with leaves (60%), kitchen scraps, bags of starbucks coffee grounds and chicken manure.
9. Ali, I was wondering whether I can produce the compost by laying it on a bed from a piece of tin and surrounding it with 4 pieces of 2x10 wooded planks?
   
   for convenience purposes I would like to produce the compost near my house, where I don't have a lawn, by putting the aforementioned components on a cement foundation.
   
   and please advise what ration should we use between>> chicken manure : grass clippings : wooden sawdust.

12. :)  That compost WAS great!  We go through so much in a season with all the fruit trees, berries, and gardens.  Thumbs up to those egg laying (and manure laying) hens!

15. I JUST CLEANED OUT MY COOP. I also have some composted rotten wood from a decomposed lumber pile in my chicken pen that I have raked up and pulled out of the pen to add to my compost and garden beds. I have lots of cardboard also. I do not throw my card board that comes into the house away. I save it and soak it good in some compost tea or rain water and lay it down on top of grass and weeds before I make a new bed. I have some grass clippings and will add leaves to the mix when they begin to fall. I also plan to make it to the dairy farm and get some free moo poo to mix in the mix of things. Hey thnx for sharing it is my next project to finish collecting the stuff I want to add to my compost and then I am going to build a compost pile in my green house so it will keep things warmer in there this winter.

19. Wet the pile only if it seems dry.  A wrung out sponge is the moisture your looking/feeling for.  We live in a very dry climate so I have to give the pile a slight sprinkle every time I turn unless we are fortunate enough to have had rain.  You can put a tarp, or burlap over the top to help hold moisture in...and it helps hold heat in as well.
