How to Care for a Rose Bush

Say it's summer time, roses have already popped and have their beautiful spring blooms take place, well now it is time for some summer care. So in the case of this rose here, you can tell that some of the blooms have expired. In the case of some of these, they may even be wind burned or they could have been attacked by one pest or another. When pruning your roses, generally speaking, you want to go down to the nearest junction of 5 leaves. So in the case here, all the way down to right here. We're going to cut at a 45 degree angle. Some of these blooms are still yet to come so I'm not going to touch those. This one is perfect for inside my home so I'm going to trim it right there. Again, a 45 degree angle and I'm pruning to the nearest 5 leaves. This plant here looks like it's been suffering from a bit of black spot or some rust. So any of the deseased leaves, a little bit of powdery mildew there, I'm getting rid of. See the black spot and see some of the powdery mildew. Any kinds of weeds need to go too. You can see this weed here, it needs to be pulled. Once you've got your rose bush all pruned up, you want to add a little fertilizer. I'm a big fan of this Fox Farms American Pride. It's an Organic Fertilizer: slow release naturally. It will feed three to four months. Applying this under the drip line of the plant will go a long way. Once you've done your summer fertilizing you'll want to top dress with a high grade potting soil or planting mix. Something that's got a well balanced make up, things like bat guano, worm castings, kelp meal, [etc.]. Again, applied under the drip line of the rose bush. You invest in your soil every season and the plants will put out for you like crazy. So getting things pruned, taking care of any roses that you'd like to put into your kitchen or bathroom, getting things in shape. [With] a little bit of fertilizer and some top dress and you're ready to go. Thanks for tuning in McShane's Nursery and Landscape Supply Copyright 2010 Landon Wolf Copyright 2010

Thanks for posting. Why do you prune down to the nearest 5 leafs? When all the Blooms have died back, When would you prune it back for winter? (Snow Country) I have a bush that blooms every year except it was never really trained onto any trellis so it lays over all the other plans
