Did I notice you have a fan to keep them cool, yet have a heater going at the same time? lol

Clean that!

Awesome, this is great!

awesome tips!

Great video. How much of an issue do you have of them eating each other?
Thanks,
David -
you gonna eat em then mate?
-
You can also feed them frozen peas and most blanched vegetables. I find it much more cost efficient in the long run. Nice vid.

Are you originally from west Texas? Your accent sounds alot like mine and im not sure what kind of accent i have exactly, im originally from southeast Ohio

I was curious if that water filter was your only means of aeration? my dad is old school with a horse trough and wire screens...(works) but I like the idea of your setup.

you dude.. I think I'm ready to try this.... nappychef35

Here is the best solution for home farming of crayfish. First of all buy about 20 of these.
http://i00.i.aliimg.com/img/pb/893/532/396/396532893_772.JPG
They are what you will hold them in obviously. They give good horizontal surface area and they aren't too deep.
Secondly, buy some mesh to place on the top of these so the crayfish can't jump out.
Thirdly, buy the pipe and cut it into sections. Put caps on the end of each section so it's only open on one end. Place about 15 of these in each barrel, place them in horizontally and sitting freely.
Fourth, line all these containers up in rows. Buy a good large air pump that is powerful. Then branch off the pipe into 20 sections into the containers and put a small air rock on the end of each tube. You can buy many of these large air pumps that are good for things up to 200-1000 liters. A 300 liter one should work.
Fifth, change the water every now and then to keep it clean and use a gravel cleaner (aquarium thing) to siphon the crayfish waste away.
That is all you really need to do. Then you have a fully functioning crayfish farm on a small scale. As far as feeding them, feed them a varied diet. It's true that the pellets are a good base, but every now and then throw in some worms or something different to help them have a variation and maybe get some nutrients they are a little low on. -
Well, I also want to make a larger setup where I can eat crayfish meat every now and then. Something with multiple plastic containers. Plus if you make the water large enough in surface area then it may aerate itself and also stay cool. Plus a large volume of water takes a long to time to gain the temperature from the day heat.
Like maybe 20 of those barrels lined up and the water kept more clean so you can see what you are netting.
I mean make a setup where you can have one crayfish meal at least once a week. That would be good, I would imagine that would require a setup with at least 800. If you take 5 big ones every week to eat. Crayfish are meant to take 90 days to reach market size, I guess it may take 120 days or something to reach the final shedding.
I think the setup with the poly pipe and the honeycomb structure isn't the best for ease of use. Sure the crayfish like it, but there has to be an easier way.
Instead you have the pipes horizontal and sitting freely and also have one end capped on each pipe. This allows you to lift the pipe out and capture the crayfish easily.
Also, cut those barrels directly in half, it doesn't matter about the Jumping as you just need to put some mesh over the top of the barrels.
This means you only need 10 barrels to have 20 usable barrels. If you have just 10 crayfish in each barrel, that is still 200 crayfish.
I think it's good to not try to overcrowd it too much. Also make it easy for the crayfish to find it's little pipe. You see a problem with the pipe arrangement in the video is that if any crayfish leaves it's pipe, it has to then walk over those other pipes to get to it's own. Then some of the other crayfish may rip into it with their claws as it walks over their home.
It's an interesting subject. I think you can use the dirty water to fertilize plants and stuff also. -
After you silicone the shit out of the pvc, then the crawfish put their own shit back into the pvc, do you have to silicone the shit out of the pvc again?

Thanks for the informative video. My kids are really wanting to start an aquaponics project; these are useful tips.
Have you tried filtering water through plants instead of changing the water so often?
I'm thinking of doing fish/crayfish/vegetables and crickets (to eat leftover greens and randomly jump into the water to entertain the fish). -
WTF!- r they living n their own shit ? If so- how do they taste? If their eating shit...how do they taste?
-
How long does it take a baby one to reach an adult
-
Sillicone the shit out of them lol
-
Dumb question, where do you get the initial stock?
-
wow.. this is painful.. ever heard of a water heater?? & all marine animals need filtration AND airation! also YES you need bigger tanks to encourage growth & whoever told you they grow slower in captivity is retarded! decent space + good food (not cheap shit fish food) & they will grow twice as fast in captivity... cant believe i havent seen this stupidity before now
