I enjoy your videos as they are: full of useful information, well explained, have a concise, clear format with interesting imagery. This was my very first year and I went overboard with 8 raised beds, as well as 'in the ground' beds. I grew everything from seed, including tomatoes and other warm weather crops which I began in the house. I was relatively pleased with my results, however; there was room for improvement so I began to experiment with hot composting. It took a few tries but I eventually got it to work and I am almost at the stage where I can use it - I am in a race against nature. What do you think about wood ash to use directly on the beds or in the compost? Do you have a separate area for a worm casting pile? Is it in a bin? How long does it take before the worm castings can be used?
Thank you very much for your efforts. -
did you test for heavy metal contamination

I've seen similar results. It really doesn't take long to bring soil nutrients to optimal levels with some basic inputs, like leaf mulch.

youre looking like a friend of mine :)

Valuable information.

Thanks for the information. I am slowly building up my garden soil. Last fall I put down some slow compost, cardboard and couple inches of leaves for next years fruit trees. The wife saw this and bought trees a year early. While pulling weeds I noticed an abundance of large earth worms. Worm castings in place. Even where I didn't add the compost the worms are going wild. Compost and mulch are the way to go the earthworms are and added bonus.

Thanks for the info on how you built up your soil. This is what I'm doing now, half way through my second year building up compost and mulch on top of original clay weed infested ground.

Hi Patrick! I have some questions about your garden's raised beds. You said that originally the soil was very bad before you amended it. When you first started the beds, did you dig deeply in the original soil or did you just pile your amendments on top? I put bricks around the outside of what I call my raised bed--I have about 5 inches of amendments over 2 years. I know you used to plant cover crops--did you till that in? If you did, how did you do that? I thought you could talk about that in one of your videos. After 2 years and 5'' of amendments, I thought my soil would be looser. The original soil is still rock like clay, but the 5'' is good soil. Have you noticed whether your original soil has changed in 6 years? Thanks for your wonderful videos! I enjoy all of them.

Hi, I'm in the UK with a garden. This maybe a stupid question as a beginner, what exactly is the MULCH composition? I have a straw mulch here..(it's called strulch) and I've used that. But otherwise, I use my own compost and some conditioning soil for my raised beds this year (first year). What do I mix together to make the MULCH you use? Thanks.

Thank for all your hard work making the world a better place. Do you have videos on the making of your mulches?

+OneYardRevolution | Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening Very nice food for thought, I originally went to raised beds to eliminate tilling, I'm definitelly trying to do as little as possible, particullary pulling weeds...I've noticed plants not yellowing anymore and such...Its really the same dirt I've always had its just ammended now, rockless and in raised beds...I'm noticing more vigor in my garden every year now Like what you demonstrated, great stuff Patrick, Thanks, :)

Fantastic video.. This shows you can grow organically in time. I know you are thinking you may have to much high levels in some areas. Have you ever watch the video " Back to Eden...? His levels at are 10x higher the normal and no problems. Your thoughts?
