My tumeric pot has literally busted open. I live in Zone 9 in U.S. It flowered profusely this past season and was stunning! It has completely died back. I guess I need to get in there and thin the herd. :) My ginger does very well here too. It also has many luscious blooms and needs harvesting. I have several types and I really enjoy them.

I am in US and just a note u harvested your turmeric a bit too early as the smaller pieces were just starting to make. It is a heavy feeder and I have found that on our long summer that even the turmeric I planted in march didn't really start to grow tubers till the shorter days of fall. Nobody said that in any of the videos I have seen but in your cooler climate u start early indoors in containers & plant outdoors when warm weather starts. Water well once a week unless u have a lot of rain ,to run off and fertlize often. Containers do seem best for me but lots of mulch is a must so the soil is soft for the tubers. This is my 3rd year growing turmeric and I grow it in bathtubs & large containers like your boxes. Don't stop watering too early they will grow till frost or freeze then either leave the tubers in soil with NO WATER THRU WINTER or harvest & dry like u do ginger and just keep in a cool dry place thru winter. Mine keeps on the back porch where I keep the plants that won't go below 40 degrees. I hope this helps u
with your turmic growing to get a bigger harvest regardless of how short your summer is. -
Thank you for your reply! and the organic cooking link. You are making some fine growing boxes too, which my husband admired. I will subscribe NOW!

Hi , Would you consider doing a video on the germination of Echinacea and artichoke seeds, Having a whale of a time trying to get these to germinate in the tropics. Any assistance in your experiences appreciates. My I make a suggestion based on my ginger planting and harvest in a container. I seeded ginger for about 3 months. Planted out in a 12 inch by 12 inch pot and hilled up as the green of the ginger rhyzome sprouted up. In 9 months the ginger plant almost filled up the pot. Problem with ginger I think is getting really clean ginger seed. Left the pot in standing water filled with woodchips to avoid the mosquitos

Hi I wanted to find out about growing turmeric. With ginger
I know that ginger is planted shallowly. the rhizome is hilled up to promote
and lateral growth there is a hilling up of the ginger. From my experiences
ginger grows up and laterally rather than down. Is the same technique to be
applied for turmeric.
Planted turmeric and just left it there for about 2 years
and got a great harvest. Never hilled up. Turmeric seemed to grow down rather
than up. What is your take on the planting procedure for turmeric. Regular
watering seems to help promote rhizome and leaf production.
Also ginger appears to like a confined space, can the same
be said for turmeric. -
your turmeric looks amazing. any chance you could sell a bit , i am struggling with acne and ive researched that raw fresh turmeric is much more affective then dried powder ... great videos!!

+Sir David Haddon There are various uses for turmeric leaves, both culinary and medicinal. As the plant is primarily considered a spice or herb, these seem mainly to be in the form of infusions, teas or tisanes and for flavouring, such as wraps for fish and the famous steamed coconut cake patholi. That said, I do use herb leaves in salads, lemon balm, various basil varieties.. and I would think the young leaves would be the best but I would check recipes from South-eastern Asia. It is one of those plants where you can use the whole, apparently the flowers are a prized 'vegetable' dish, so if I am every lucky enough to get my plants to flower, I will let you know. Hope this helps and all the very best, Pavlovafowl aka Sue

Can the leaves be eaten in salad or are there any other uses for the leaves?

Turmeric-curcumin -ginger with onion-garlic-chilli in curry powder is the most compatible set of spices food to mix well with some meat or fish and vegetable of any type and kind, very tasty if you know how to cook & add some salt & sugar with pepper powder for good favor and taste to serve with cooked rice or noodle for daily meals. I buy all these ingradients in supermart as it is more convenient to do so. I have little time to plant them in my house as it is time consuming and troublesome in reality.
