Aisha Khalid, Urdu VOA News, Washington A thick cover of fog over large swaths of Pakistan during winter causes extreme difficulty for commuters as well as several accidents every year. Meteorologist Dr. Muhammad Haneef wants to know what explanation American weather experts have for this phenomenon that affects three provinces of India at the same time. This answer for this Hello America is given by Dr. Andrew Robertson of Columbia University's International Research Institute for Climate and Society. Dr. Robertson says that contrary to popular belief that westerly winds cause this phenomenon in the region, it is actually increased agricultural activity during winter months that is the major cause of fog. According to him increased agricultural activity involves more use of the water for irrigation which causes an increase in surface water which eventually contributes to more fog formation.
