I knit socks only socks almost completely free. The word has got out that I will take odds and ends from older people who have lost their sight or hand agility or have even died. Families don't know what to do to get rid of their craft stuff. I get garbage bags full I take the wool that I can use the and I donate the rest to the seniors group and they use it to do whatever and it goes on and on and I just use all the little odds and ends to make stripes

we had started doing the same here in Colo. this year. Great minds .......
-
Claire, that is really great - I appreciate your service to those that served!! :) I am sure your parents are proud, too. ;)

How about contacting some hat manufacturing companies.

Keep a notebook of how you organise and implement this project. You might follow the format of the 4H project record books. Have your parents add this project to your homeschool transcript, and give you credit for it, by calling it your "Senior Project." Keep a record of the number of hours you put towards your project, including actually making the hats, teaching others to make them, contacting agencies to distribute, and distributing them yourself. Keep a digital photo/video journal of your activities. Set up a separate checking account for donations, and learn about financial literacy: another course on your transcript as a math credit. Perhaps explore how non-profits are set up so that you can involve more people and develop your personal leadership skills, another possible elective transcript credit. That way if you decide to apply for college admissions it balances out your academics. Many college admissions committees give as much weight to co-curricular activities as your academics. And when scholarship packages are handed out, it increases your visibility on the committee's radar. Good luck, and congratulations on your development of a stellar project!

Just finished one beanie for Hats for Vets!

Type of yarn? Wool or acrylic? There's allergies & care to think of. Color limitations? Military is pretty strict on what members can wear on the field, but retired folk I'm pretty sure can wear anything. I just got THREE crates of yarn from my mother-in-law to add to the FOUR boxes I inherited from my mother, and then there are the boxes I already owned ... THANK YOU for coming up with a new way to use it up besides just afghans/granny squares/mittens/etc.

What a great idea Claire, You are special. Being a vet myself i'm proud to know you. God Bless you.

Awesome idea Clare. So kind of you I live very close to a VA clinic also I will send you some and and take some here. Love your commitment.

I love when young people have such compassion and fortitude!

Churchill once said we were two countries seperated by a common language. How true. We thought you meant your vet need a hat, sounds obvious once you listen to Claire but here we shorten vetinarian to vet and veterans are usually former servicemen and women no matter where they served. Good idea though.

if you could include the branch of service on the hat such as army/navy/marines and their emblems it would scream or maybe just their colors we all got different colors mine are blue and gold

Also contact your local VA volunteer service office they can get you into contact with Vets. Also, momma does the afghans, a lot of VA's are looking for lap robes for the Vets. Sorry, it's a very precious close to my heart item. I was a VAVS Rep for a VA in Chicago where we had a HUGE homeless veteran population. God bless me hubby who crocheted not only countless laprobes but sleeping mats made from plastic grocery bags. Our VA also had a weekly food pantry. There is so much need for our veterans. Brad, you have raised one amazing young woman. Clare, you are a blessing. I can guarantee you will see hats from this household. My hubby is itching for a new project. YOU ALL ROCK!
