I purchased 4.5 acres in Huachuca Arizona, about a 15 minute drive from Tombstone, I've been watching you and GYG closely to learn what I can grow in my new climate. Huachuca doesn't get near as hot and has more monsoon rains because of the elevation and the Huachuca mountains. Huachuca in Apache means (Thunder). I'm currently living in San Diego and moving March 2017 to AZ with my lovely Chinese wife, recently retired and looking forward to my freedom in AZ. What are you wanting I like eating them when they are almost orange and stuff like that no was a little too hard. How are you can eat is like it is an apple. Why do you think there are so many Phoenix palms out there they're basically like apples.

You know us omnivores love dates also right so it's not just of the vegan thing

Hi Jake - Love your garden and interest in date palms. Curious to know how old your date tree was when you planted it, and when you can expect to harvest your dates? I currently garden hydro-organically veggies, herbs, and also have organic mango and avocado trees in South Florida, PBC. I am in Zone 10 - can I grow what you grow in Tempe?

can you ever keep dates from getting so tall? can I keep cutting them back each year so they're always accessible by a ladder?

At that stage, how can one tell the sex of the date palms?
Ideally I think, one would want all the date palm trees to be female. Right? Possibly one male. But that has been my deterrent to getting date palms: not knowing what I'm going to get.
