If it wasn't for the airplane liquid rules, you could probably just bring them home in a carry-on case - I know you can do that with small dogs on domestic US flights.

oh dude, I have no idea. I commented b/c I knew about cats/dogs. I think it was like $75-150 for cats and dogs, but you're essentially buying them a crate and a 'seat' in the plane. Fish are weird though b/c they have a big time restriction w/ air and all. Google 'hong kong pet export', there's probably goldfish enthusiasts out there with this covered on their message boards, or businesses trying to sell. Koi enthusiasts know the ropes really well.

I looked into bringing a cat home when I was in Beijing, from the little looking I did online about the airline rules, US & China customs rules, it seemed surprisingly hassle-free. You do have to pay extra and pay to have the animal quarantined in-case customs requires it. I'm not surprised about birds. They can carry bird flu, ESPECIALLY in SE Asia.. that's exactly where it starts, those crazy animal/food/pet markets where they're stacked on top of each other, sharing air & diseases.

You can bring back dogs and cats no problem surprisingly. People regularly ship koi fish from Japan.. US may have a more relaxed attitude about it b/c its Hong Kong and not mainland. Google 'hong kong pet export' or something?
