Giant Sturgeon Weighing 450 kg Caught in Northeast China

Fishermen recently captured a 450 kg sturgeon which is thought to be the largest female sturgeon of the last decade in Fuyuan County, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The staff at the sturgeon breeding base estimate the 3.15-meter long sturgeon's age to be between 60 to 70 years old. Because of the sheer size of its body, the sturgeon suffered injuries to the neck and spine when the fishermen caught it. "The sturgeon was injured when the fishermen were catching it, so it suffered a little hypoxia in the transportation. But we dealt with the wounds before we put it into the fishpond. I think the sturgeon can survive and make a gradual recovery," said Zhu Zhu, head of the trout releasing station in Fuyuan County. The sturgeon is recuperating under the care of workers in the breeding base. Workers will expedite its spawning artificially after it recovers, and breed and release the fish fries.
