There is bad news for Punjab farmers from Georgia, where a large number of them had bought agricultural lands during the past five years. Farmers opted to sell their land in Punjab and buy cheaper though fertile land in Georgia are now being denied visas by the Georgian Government. This is reportedly after locals in Georgia started protesting against their government's policy of allowing Indians and Chinese farmers to purchase land. "Georgia for Georgians" slogan has been circulating there for some months now. The Punjab Government must seek Government of India's intervention to allow the Punjab farmers who have already bought land there to get Visas. Even if fresh transactions are not to be allowed, those who have already spent their life's earnings must be allowed to go. Or at least allowed to get their money back. This incident reflects once again the failure of the Punjab Government to regulate its people who are seeking greener pastures abroad. The Ministry of NRI Affairs in Punjab should have stepped forward to become the nodal agency facilitating purchase of land by its people in Georgia and elsewhere. Besides, this reflects the poor state of agrarian economy in Punjab which is forcing people to look elsewhere.
