Genetically Modified Food Label Initiative Failing - Why?
"On Nov. 6, those of us who live in California will get to vote on Proposition 37, which requires mandatory labeling of genetically-engineered foods (GMOs). And the whole country is watching. It's shaping up to be quite the battle. A quick glance at who's supporting the bill and who's against it should tell you a lot. Supporters include Joe Mercola, the Organic Consumers Fund, Nature's Path Foods, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, Clif Bar and Co., and Annie's. Opponents include Monsanto, Dupont, PepsiCo, DOW, Kraft Foods, Coca-Cola, Nestle, General Mills and Kelloggs. Questions, anyone? The issue of GMOs has been a perplexing one and not nearly as simple as people on both sides of the fence try to make it. People have been selectively breeding crops and animals for ages (how do you think we have jumbo roses, or Boston Terriers, or uniformly-red tomatoes)? And there are honest, well-meaning scientists who are trying to solve massive problems like vitamin deficiencies in third world countries using GMO techniques. Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Institute for Plant Sciences, for example, have created a strain of "golden" rice that contains an unusually high amount of beta-carotene (vitamin A) and hope to offer the golden rice seed free to any third world country that requests it."* Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss why GMO labeling is failing in the polls even though it wouldn't cost taxpayers anything and is already in wide practice worldwide (hint: money). TYT/SJW Logic: We don't understand science therefore we should ban the most important technologies of our time because we like to feel victimized and protest things that aren't actually harmful.
-
As long as basically every piece of food has a label saying that the genes of this have been selectively modified for thousands of years, I'm fine with ALSO labeling food that's been modified in other ways.
-
80% of corn is gmo, 93% of soy is gmo, 95% sugar is gmo.
and you favor gmo labeling? why? it will drive the food price up and it's pointless, makes no sense.
regulate organic industry, we have the right to know which pesticide they spray on food. I don't want to pay for high price organics that was sprayed with highly toxic copper pesticides. -
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere while in school that all our current foods are Genetically modified breeds that have survived or something, bred selectively grown

These scientifically illiterate broadcasters have never heard of Independent Scientific studies?

A GMO label tells a person nothing about what is in their food. A GMO tells you how the seed was derived. That is, through transgenic technology. Seeds are derived by many other technologies such as mutagenesis, cross breeding, in vitro fertilization, artificial selection, etc...none of these are gmo. Further, knowing how the seed was derived does not tell you how the food was grown, processed, etc etc.. This label movement is clearly because people believe that gmos are the worse (despite a plethora of science to the contrary) and they believe that because of the misinformation and fear mongering being spread. They want gmos irradicated and are using the dishonest strategy of using the "right to know" as the trojan horse for gmo irradiction. What a colossal waste of time and money.

Bullshit! Another BS statistic without any proof. No one but the greedy bastards in corporate places wants GMO manipulation.. There is no serious scientific proof that GMO won't change our existence at the genetic level.
-
This is so messed up. Companies should not be allowed to buy their way out of cheating their customers. This is so crap. I swear if I get hired at a grocery store, I am going to do the research and label it myself.
-
You guys are SO DUMB! Really, Ana? No testing for genetically modified foods. Are you crazy? It's anti-science crap like this that makes it hard to take you seriously.
-
why does nobody care that they are being poisoned like does nobody give a shit..
the stupidity of people is amazing but i guess bring pumped full of toxins you cant blame them. -
i think this is really a free market thing.
the companies that don't use GMOs in their products could just label exactly that. -
Almost every single food we eat today has been selectively bred from a wild less edible ancestor. And was modified over a period spanning thousands of years. And now we can do it instantly in the lab and everybody freaks out wtf.

There is no serious scientific study that has ever shown any negative health health or environmental effects from eating or using GMO crops. There are over 1700 real scientific studies that show GMO foods are safe. Given these scientific facts, any claims that people need to be warned about GMO foods is simply prejudice, not science. Imagine if some White supremacists demanded all products made by African-Americans or Jews should be so labeled. Everyone would rightly denounce the idea, but if anti-GMO activists demand labeling that panders to their prejudice, it suddenly becomes oh so reasonable.
-
Now that's the way to present a complex issue. Say there are two sides to the debate. Admit that all the information isn't in on the science. And then ask the reasonable question, "What's so bad about labeling?" Which kind or leads one to the conclusion that there's something to hide. Jeeze, doesn't that take you back to big tobacco's fight against labeling? Hmmm.
-
I encourage people to call the companies that support GMO labeling and thank them for putting their money towards this and calling those who are opposed and rebuking them. I called a number of companies, and it's surprising the reaction Gerber gave me, stating the company isn't against the labeling, but against individual states mandating it. I wish I would have thought of it before, but what is the harm in changing all their labeling if they are for informed consumers?
-
screw the vote, whether its voted in or not you can still go to your local farmers markets and buy non-gmo foods, their was a time when we didnt even have grocery stores and everyone bought food from the farmers markets. everyone start doing this again and they will take notice and change policies or go out of business.

In Monsanto We Trust.
-
Algeria, Colombia, and Venezuela are for GMO labeling and the US and Canada are not. LOL
-
The result of the GMO ballot measure just reinforces the fact that we get the government we deserve. If voters can be swayed by slick marketing and side with whatever position receives the most marketing dollars, then we cannot in good conscience blame politicians or industry for our own stupidity.
