Health Poverty Action is working to strengthen communities in Attapeu province in southern Laos, one of the poorest regions in the country. Many of the villages in Attapeu are in remote, mountainous areas. They are isolated and vulnerable to economic shocks and natural disasters, which leads to inadequate sanitation, unclean water, and food shortages. Over 40% of people experience chronic malnutrition, which has led to high levels of anaemia, fever, diarrhoea, and acute respiratory infection. This particularly impacts children under five, and hundreds of young children die every year. Health Poverty Action is working with communities in the region to strengthen them in their struggle for health. This work includes: Working with communities to increase their access to food and water. Working with communities to raise awareness of health and nutrition. Strengthening communities to ensure access to clean water through construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems, water tests, setting up water management systems, providing training on water facility management and facilitating education in schools on hygiene and sanitation. Providing tools and training on livestock and agriculture. Establishing a provincial nutrition working group. Producing and broadcasting educational radio programmes on the right to food and water. The project is funded by the European Union and UKaid from the Department for International Development.
