Bananas as a food source and resource Elemental Makeup of Banana Peels – Fertilizer potential Application Techniques of Banana Peels in the Garden Mulch Method, Vermicompost and Compost Methods Will Banana Peels Change the pH of my soil? Bananas are produced in tropical climates and the fruit we eat are a part of the berry family. Bananas are an important food source in many developing nations however after the flesh is eaten the peal is often tossed in the garbage. This is important as bananas are a significant source of food worldwide only behind Rice, Corn and Milk for total volume consumed by humans. That means in large parts of the world banana peels could very well prove a valuable resource to return nutrients to soil that increase local food production. There are plenty of claims made about banana peels and their use as a fertilizer containing high concentrations of potassium a nutrient plants use in very high concentrations. hELLO FRIEND. how about boiling banana peels in the water and applying a liquid fertllizer?

When I dehydrate bananas, I also dehydrate the banana peels. I then put them in the coffee grinder and then the powder goes into the garden or the compost tumbler. (no worry about bugs)

I am a hobby farmer in Queensland, Australia and as you are probably aware, we have slightly acidic soil here. I am trying to make my own potting mix that is of a quality I can sell but I have found it to be too acidic. I used a professional grade top soil as my base. I tested my batch after making it and the PH was 6 but a few hours later it was 5.2 - 5. Could you explain the change? I would also like to know whether you think using your method of drying banana peel would work for lime skin to help sweeten my soil and improve my alkalinity? I have a large lime tree with more lime than I can deal with. I was hoping my problem could be part of my solution.

So I moved into a new house last year. I decided to plant the entire back yard to veggie garden. I have started a composter but will not be ready until later. The garden has poor spoil as all of the plants are generally a lot smaller in size then most gardens in the neighborhood. Question Can I take all of my plants in the garden and vegetable scraps and put them through a blender and pour them back into the yard, for maybe quicker soil nutrition?

very interesting, always chop up the skins for my worm/compost bins, so its nice to have it confirmed in your proffessional style although a very knowledgable composter over here (England) soaks the banana skins to make a liquid feed for his houseplants as well

Thanks for the info - I am using powdered banana peels in my container garden for the 1st time this year, and have already done so. I will be watching my plants to make sure I didn't overdo it. Do you have an idea as to how much powder I can apply to a 5 gallon bucket? Should I mix it in with the entire soil, or should I just mix it in the soil directly below the root ball with a slight buffer of soil between it and the root ball? Do I even need the "buffer"?

Wow! I just started using banana peel powder in my garden. Again a great informative video I could not find anywhere else online. Thanks and keep up the great work.

I eat, like, 5 bananas a day.

anyone know if people can suffer from allergic reactions after the banana has broken down? I want to start composting at the nursing home I work at. We have a few people with latex allergies.

Bananas do not last long in my worm bin. They are the first thing to disappear.

leaves from treese are one of the best ways to fertilize your soil just shred the leaves first, nature does it this way why not us?

I heard (not sure where) that banana peels can, or are likely to contain high concentrations of pesticides, which can persist even in a hot compost bin? Any insight or information as to this claim? Thanks!

I put 70 peels through a grinder then into a 4'x5' raised bed. A week later potassium tested as depleted. It wasn't until I added potash did my potassium level rise.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your quick response:)

Could you please make a video on how to create a compost bin in my apartment patio? I was thinking of using a medium tall tub, so i make holes on the lid? and how often do i turn it?

I put the wet banana peels, eggs shells and water into my blender and turn it into a milk shake consistency. I pour this on my plants. They seem to love it.
