Fermented Bean Curd Tasting
The first time I tried fermented bean curd I gagged, and almost couldn't swallow it. I went back to the market where I bought it, and noticed there were about twenty different kinds, so I decided to try a few more. Two turned out to be pretty good (Not like candy good, but good enough to keep until finished). The third was pretty STRONG, and smelled like poop. I couldn't swallow the first bite, so I tried again after covering it with hot sauce. It still sucked, but I got it down...There is a HUGE difference between brands, and now I have a favorite. so which is your favorite brand?
-
omg it's so salty how do you eat a whole cube, usually 1 whole cube lasts me a whole bowl of rice.
-
The green label one is the most popular one and really is the best one for cooking.
-
I ate half a jar today. goes great with red wine! yummy :)
-
yeah the third one is disgusting. even for an Asian that one's horrible
-
wow , that's some heavy dose of condiment, my family uses it in dishes sometimes, but a jar lasts a long time, not much is necessary to spice things up.
-
you should try eating it on slices of man tou fried in oil.
-
you are not supposed to eat these raw? you cook with these?
-
I'm serious you do not have to cook this stuff first?

WOW! What a brave man! THUMB UP!
Looks like you can handle very salty foods pretty well! So I recommend you Leek flower sauce (韭花酱). Try it with bread, you'll like it!
By the way, there's another kind of fermented tofu, which has dark gray color. You can also try it, if you want.....xD -
Dude it's used in marinades and sauces...
-
it taste so good with 1 or 2 teaspoon sugar added.

Eat it with rice it's good!! It's like when you don't have anything accompanying your meal you eat it. That's why there are such strong flavors. I am surprised that you are actually courageous enough to eat it and liked it. Nice!
PS. You don't eat them on bread!!!!! -

It sounds like you want deep fried tofu with stinky tofu sauce. It is a common street food in many Asian countries. Fresh tofu is deep fried, sometimes twice for extra crunch, and coated with a sauce that is made out of the stinky tofu that you sample in this video. Fermented cabbage and white rice are often served as side dishes.

Fermented bean curd can be a sauce. You can take some to lamb, pork or vegetable.

Huge Thumbs up for giving it an "hoest" try and not doing it "oh i challenge you to eat copious amiunts of it by itself, haha i puked lol" style. I might give it a try myself, maybe you can get it in germany...
-
great in congee...
its no more or less exotic then an aged stinky cheese. -
BTW, Wang Zhihe(王致和) makes the best fermented bean curd in my opinion. look for the brand, you will not be disappointed

I eat the red fermented bean curd with Hotpot (boiled beef slices/lamb slices) and sesame sauce/chili sauce mixed up, very tasty. It is a traditional East China Style. Hope you like it.
